Have you ever stared a paint chip in the face, wondering if that color would transform your room or if it was a costly mistake. We’ve all done it, right? Fear of picking the wrong color is paralyzing. What if I told you that choosing the perfect paint color involves more than picking a color from a swatch, but also understanding light, context and your personal style?

I was afraid of disappointing people when I shared my favorite colors. Not because I was exclusive, but I feared disappointment. It’s okay if a color that looks great in my home doesn’t work in yours. It’s not just about knowing the name of the color, but also how to apply it in your space.

Let me take you on a journey. Take Oyster Bay–a color I adore. In my bedroom with its northern and easterly light, it feels soothing and soft. In my laundry room it takes on an intense green color when lit by southern light. The same color, but two personalities. Then, there’s a moody twist to another room where I went a little darker for a richer feeling.

Let’s talk about Sea Salt. Years ago, I fell in love with this light blue/green room that my sister painted. It was the starting point for exploring other shades within the same family and creating a consistent yet varied palette throughout my home.

It’s important to remember that choosing paint colors is only one part of the puzzle. It’s the fourth part of what I call “Order of Decor.” The color choice will become clearer once you get the foundational elements, such as layout and furniture, right.

How do you find the perfect color? Test colors first. Grab samples, paint posters boards, and experiment with them at different times of the day. Observe the way the light changes and how you feel. Remember, there is no one size fits all. It’s important that the color you choose enhances your space and resonates with you.
